One of the best ways to explore Ballina is on foot. Ballina to Lennox Head walk

This picturesque coastal stroll is loved by tourists and locals alike and is one of the best walks in Ballina. On your journey, you'll pass seven immaculate beaches and find yourself arriving in the friendly community of Lennox Head. Setting off before sunrise gives you the chance to see the area come to life, including birds, dolphins and other early risers, like you.

If you're chasing bigger hikes near Ballina, then you'll feel like you've hit the jackpot with the variety of options. Hit winding trails, like the Northern Rivers Rail Trail Walk or nearby Minyon Falls return loop, or take your time with shorter paths, like local classic Killen Falls. All of these walks will get you up close and personal to one of the world’s most diverse habitats, the Gondwana Rainforests.

Yuraygir Coastal Walk

As one of the premier hikes in the Northern Rivers, the Yuraygir Coastal Walk's 65km trail takes around 4-5 days to complete. Following the coastal emu markers, there are ample places to stop for a swim and snorkel, plus seasonal whale watching (from June to November).

Nightcap National Park

Jump in the car and drive north for a little over an hour to explore Nightcap National Park. Directly west of Brunswick Heads and Byron Bay, it's a World Heritage-listed rainforest home to walking, hiking and mountain biking trails, ready for you to discover. Ballina's subtropical weather can be unpredictable, so check local forecasts before you venture out. Spring and early summer are generally the driest and best for long days out on the trail.

What is the Ballina coastal pathway?

The Ballina Shire Coastal Recreation Path gives cyclists and walkers an opportunity to discover the epic coastline from Lennox Head to Ballina via a shared paved pathway. It's a beautiful way to explore the area and boost your step count (or kilometre clicks) at the same time!

How long is the Ballina to Lennox Head walk?

Just shy of 12km, this breezy coastal walk in Ballina will take you between 2.5 and 3 hours. Passing seven incredible beaches on the way, it's the place to be to watch the sun peek up over the Pacific at sunrise. And the best part? Lennox Head is just as stunning as Ballina, perfect for brekkie and a latte when you arrive.


Where do you start the Minyon Falls walk?

To access the trail for the Minyon Falls loop, you can start your journey at either of the picnic areas. Pack yourself a lunch as there's a gorgeous place to stop at Repentance Creek amongst the ancient ferns.

Can you swim at Killen Falls?

Yes, you can take a refreshing dip in a swimming hole on Emigrant Creek at Killen Falls. Don't forget to keep an eye out for local wildlife, like turtles and birds, and note that it's about another 500m to walk down to swim.
