Red Rock Weather Guide

Warm, beautiful and worth the trip

The mild, somewhat tropical climate of the NSW Coffs Coast has the kind of weather that travellers rave about – especially in Red Rock. But there are some differences to bear in mind when you’re planning your next holiday.

Here’s our Red Rock weather guide, complete with the intel you need to nail your packing list and choose the best time of year to visit.

Best time to visit Red Rock

Plan your visit from September to May because this is generally considered the best time to visit Red Rock. There’s a nice mix of sunny days and occasional showers, and if you time it right, you can miss the school holiday and/or Christmas crowds. Especially in Spring, September to November, which has the most pleasant weather, heaps of sunshine, and the least amount of rain.

If you like lush, green and gloriously beachy weather, make summer the season you visit. It’s that humid, tropical-feeling kind of weather that brings afternoon thunderstorms rolling in off the Pacific. Here’s a tip: December is the best Red Rock beach weather – it’s not as hot as January or as wet as February. And while the ocean water feels like a bath, if you’re sensitive to humidity, you may find the sticky a challenge!

Autumn in Red Rock (Mar–May)

Even though autumn often starts wet and rainy, the weather in Red Rock gets drier and more beautiful as the season progresses. The heat backs off considerably – so too does the humidity – and that soft, golden light transforms the Coffs Coast sky. This shoulder season is quiet as the summer crowds head home, but it’s still warm enough to swim and get out and about on adventures.

Winter in Red Rock (Jun–Aug)

Average high: 18℃ / Average low: 12℃

Winter weather in Red Rock is mild in all the right ways, with those clear and crisp sunny days that this part of the coastline is known and loved for. Night temps can dip low, especially when you head inland, but the days still retain plenty of sunshine. This is a great season for walks and hikes (low humidity and little rain), or getting out on the water to fish or kayak (keep an eye out for migrating whales).

Spring in Red Rock (Sep–Nov)

Average high: 23℃ / Average low: 15℃

Spring has all the appeal of summer, without the crowds and sticky heat. The weather in Red Rock has everything you’d expect for this season: blooming wildflowers, wildlife activity, and even the tail end of whale migration season. September is the driest and sunniest month, perfect for taking a leisurely stroll through Yuraygir National Park for some nature time.

Does Red Rock get a lot of rain?

Yes, particularly in late summer, Red Rock does see a fair bit of rain throughout the year. September weather in Red Rock is the driest, so if you’re looking to avoid the wet, that’s the sunniest and best time to plan a trip.

Is the water warm enough to swim year-round?

That depends on how sensitive you are to the cold. December to April have the warmest ocean water temperatures, while winter is cooler, so wearing a wetsuit is a good idea, especially if you plan on surfing.

Can it get cold at night in Red Rock NSW?

Yes, in winter. Overnight temperatures can dip down to the early teens even though the days are mild, clear and sunny. It’s worth bringing some layers if you’re visiting in the cooler months, especially if you want to camp.

Is Red Rock a popular spot for fishing?

Yes, absolutely! The rock platform and anywhere along Corindi Beach are where you’ll often find anglers dropping a line. Winter and spring are ideal times, mostly due to the clear days, low rainfall and lack of humidity. Watch out for summer storms and big swells, which can make rock fishing dangerous, so check conditions before you head out.
