Camp in an outdoor lover’s paradise at Wyangala Dam
A Wyangala Waters camping adventure means days filled with awesome outdoor activities such as fishing, boating, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, jet-skiing, hiking, bushwalking, swimming, and of course, relaxing.
Everywhere you look at Wyangala Waters, there’s another stunning view of rolling hills, bushland and so much water, as the volume of Wyangala Dam is twice that of Sydney Harbour.
Camping on the shores of sparkling Wyangala Dam will have you feeling as though you’re far removed from city life, yet this wilderness escape is only a half hour drive from Cowra and a 1.5 hour drive from Bathurst.
A camping holiday at Wyangala Waters Holiday Park is perfect for families, couples and groups of friends. Leashed dogs are welcomed with open arms, so everyone can join in on the fun to be had.
Craft a perfect Wyangala Waters camping experience
At Wyangala Waters Holiday Park, everything you need is a stone’s throw away. There’s a huge range of spacious sites that are ideal for caravans, motorhomes, trailers and tents.
The 60 dog-friendly powered campsites in the centre of the park are either a single slab (of 3 x 6 metres), or grassy. These campsites fit camping set-ups of up to nine metres, host six guests, and some also have two-way access. The sites are a short stroll to the lake, and close to the park’s amenities such as the huge camp kitchen with a dining area, large laundry facilities and barbecue areas.
For more traditionalist campers, there are 250 unpowered sites at Reflections Wyangala Waters spread across the serene, grassy shores of Wyangala Dam. So, you can easily take that spontaneous dip or fit in a spot of fishing. Whether you're pitching a tent or a swag or have a large caravan, motorhome, or camper set-up, the extra-large sites offer more space than the powered ones in the park’s centre. And being smack bang on the water, they’ll have you really getting back to nature. Each site can accommodate up to six guests.
All campsites have access to untreated dam water, which is not suitable for drinking, so bring your own drinking water.
If you’re keen to throw a line in, or go boating, the nearby boat ramp is a hop, skip and a jump away, and for those who love a walk in nature, there are plenty of trails nearby. However, on a Wyangala Dam camping adventure you don’t need to leave your campsite to be surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.
Wyangala Waters amenities
Even if you do have your own kitchen on wheels, having a well-equipped camp kitchen nearby is a blessing, especially when you feel like meeting up with others or its raining and you feel like being outdoors. Cook delicious meals on the park barbecues, gas hot plates and stoves, store some of your food in the large fridge, or use the microwave for heating leftovers. There’s also a toaster, kettle and cutlery for easy breakfasts, and a TV in the living space.
For those who love cooking on a fire, all campsites are allowed to have fires when there’s no fire ban in place. Fire pits can be rented from the front office, where wood is also for sale. There are communal fire pits near the camp kitchen so you can catch up with other campers and share stories well into the night.
The park has a large laundry and clotheslines, which is always a relief when you have a few loads of washing to get out of the way.
For snacks and some hot food, the park’s kiosk sells hot chips burgers, coffee, ice cream and cold drinks - check with park reception for opening times and days.
Plenty of kids go camping at Wyangala Dam, so there’s a playground and an exciting pump track for scooters and bikes. There’s also a community hall on the grounds that is available to rent for special events. In the school holidays there’s activities to entertain little ones, so just ask at the desk for what’s on during your stay.
Wyangala Dam fishing is the stuff of dreams. Murray cod, yellow belly, catfish bream, trout, carp and rainbow trout are some popular catches, and there’s ample fish cleaning facilities and a handy boat ramp that takes the hassle out of getting on to the water.
For a scenic drive, head into nearby Cowra and visit the famous Cowra Japanese Gardens, which has an onsite café, and is the largest Japanese Garden in the Southern Hemisphere.
Or, there are plenty of nearby wineries to visit for tastings.
