Located in the arrivals terminal of the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport, Djandamandi Jugan – Garrima Jugan is a stunning series of woven sculptures by Nyangbal artist Tania Marlowe, created in collaboration with local Elders, artists, and community members.
The installation features a collection of woven fish traps and circular weavings, each reflecting the colours, plant species, and environments of Ballina Shire. Made from local native fibres — including Lomandra, Bangalow Palm inflorescence, Lawyer Cane, and Cabbage Tree fibre — the works are dyed using natural plant-based pigments that echo the tones of Country.
Beyond their beauty, these weavings honour the ancestors, Nyangbal Elders, and the Aboriginal community, recognising the deep cultural heritage of the region. Together, they offer a heartfelt welcome to all who pass through the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport.
Local weavers Tania Marlowe and Deb Cole, founders of Jugan Dandii, are dedicated to connecting people with nature through traditional weaving. Their practice celebrates cultural connection and sustainability, offering workshops that invite participants to learn about native fibres and walk in the footsteps of their ancestors. As they describe: "Through walking our land and retracing the footprints of our ancestors, we connect with the environment while feeding our spirit as we gather fibres."
