Ballina Public Art - Mingaloo

Glowing softly in the heart of Lennox Head, Mingaloo is a stunning galvanised metal and LED light sculpture by local artist Kerrith Giese. The artwork serves as a luminous reminder of the annual humpback whale migration that graces the Northern Rivers coastline — and of the rare and much-loved white whale, Migaloo, who sometimes passes by these very shores. Now sighted for over 30 years, Migaloo has become a symbol of wonder and connection to the ocean. This sculpture captures that spirit — the light, movement, and awe of seeing the whales on their journey north. Kerrith Giese is a Northern Rivers artist whose work often explores the connection between people, place, and nature. Her sculptural pieces combine creativity and craft, transforming metal and light into expressive forms that engage and inspire. Mingaloo continues her exploration of how art can reflect the rhythm of the natural world and our deep relationship with the sea.
