How do entries work for junior surf comps?

Here’s how the process usually works:

1. Become a Surfing Australia member
Most sanctioned junior competitions require competitors to hold a current Surfing Australia membership. This provides insurance coverage and eligibility for ranking events.

2. Find an event
Junior competitions are listed on the Surfing NSW events calendar. Events may include regional titles, junior series events, and pathway competitions that can lead to national championships.

3. Enter online
Entries are submitted online through the event page. Surfers choose the correct age division (for example, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 or Under-18) and pay the entry fee.

4. Entry limits and waitlists
Many competitions have limited spots per division and prioritise entries on rankings. Once a division fills, surfers may be placed on a waitlist.

5. Competition format
On the day, competitors surf in timed heats and are scored by judges. Surfers with the highest scores advance through rounds until the finals determine the winners.

6. Pathway opportunities
Results from some junior events contribute to rankings or qualification pathways for larger competitions such as state titles or the Australian Junior Surfing Titles.

For beginners, local boardrider club competitions are often the easiest way to get started before entering larger Surfing NSW events.

When is surfing competition season in NSW?
