With surrounding waterways feeding into the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean, fishing and boating are popular pastimes in Foster.

Bream, flathead and whiting are plentiful here. Don’t have a boat? No problem, you can catch fish right from the shore. Try dropping a line from the Forster-Tuncurry Bridge, or the breakwall. Bringing your own boat? There’s several ramps to choose from, including Forster Boat ramp with plenty of parking.

If game fishing is your thing, head out to the deep with Forster Fishing Charters for the chance to catch pearl perch, snapper, kingfish and shark. Looking for things to do in Forster for families? Rent kayaks, canoes, stand up paddle boards or aqua bikes for a heap of fun on the water.

Forster camping holidays go hand in hand with hiking and bush walking, and with Booti Booti, Wallingat and Myall Lakes National Parks on your doorstep there’s plenty of scenic trails to explore. The Booti Hill and Wallis Lake Trail winds through coastal rainforest, over clifftops and along the shore, with the chance to meet the stars of the show, the local kangaroos and koalas. Or how about a short hike to Cape Hawk Lookout for bird’s eye views of the region? Many also think that you shouldn’t miss the Bicentennial Trail (4km each way) which takes in some of Forster’s prettiest beaches, and is pram friendly in parts. Feeling inspired? Watching the mighty whales swim by

From May to November, mighty humpback whales cruise the coastline on their annual migration from the icy waters of Antarctica to the tropical waters of Harvey Bay. Whales (and dolphins) can be spotted even from the beach, but for close-up encounters with these amazing creatures, known as the acrobats of the sea, head out on a boat. Gadhu Dreamland offers daily whale watching tours in season.
