Top tips for the perfect Lake Keepit holiday

We’re all about nature-based experiences where you can switch off and connect with the people that you love, within easy reach of mobile reception and good coffee.

If you’re looking to escape the city and discover the rolling hills and greener pastures of inland NSW, Lake Keepit at Tamworth is the perfect winter break. Located on Kamilaroi country, Lake Keepit is nearly as large as Sydney Harbour and is home to water birds and fish, as well as sailors and fishermen.

Our park is within driving distance of Newcastle and Sydney, and within easy reach of Tamworth and Gunnedah attractions. It offers plenty of space for the kids to roam and the rustic charm of your childhood. Here are our tips for making the most of your stay.

Pick up some goodies on the way

Whether you’re camping, caravanning or booking a cabin, you’ll want to stock up on your favourite treats so you can put your feet up and relax for a few days. Aside from the staples, think marshmallows for roasting, something nice to drink as the sun sets, and your favourite BBQ foods. If you forget something, we’ve got a kiosk on site for your convenience.

Fuel up

There are plenty of great cafes along the way to keep you fed and watered. Our crew’s favourite stopovers on the New England Highway are The Plains Pantry at Willow Tree for a great flat white, succulent slices and gourmet groceries, or the Life of Pie at Murrurundi for hearty pies and sausage rolls.

Salute the sun

Our camping and van sites are right by the lake – the perfect spot to sit and watch the sunset. Why not embrace the African safari tradition of a sundowner, sipping your favourite drink while watching the sunset over the lustrous Lake Keepit. Or check out their Glamping Tents for 2 in their own mini precinct, right on the water, with their own firepit and BBQs.

Fire up the BBQ

Our communal camp kitchen is the perfect spot to grill some snags while getting to know your neighbours. There’s even a cosy campfire where you can teach the kids how to roast marshmallows.

Spot some stars

Immersed in nature, free of city lights, you’re in prime position for some serious star gazing. Get the kids to help you spot the southern cross or look out for a shooting star.

Snuggle up

The cooler temperature is perfect for snuggling up and enjoying a well-deserved snooze. Pack some extra blankets for a blissful slumber. With the lake and rolling hills as your neighbours, you’re sure to get a good night’s sleep.

Rise with nature

Rise and shine with the gentle trill of the magpies. Rug up in your cosy coat and scarf and enjoy a leisurely walk along the lake, marvelling at her changing colours as the sun peeks over the mountains. Spot the pelicans and swans as they fish for their breakfast feast.

Roam if you want to

Our self-contained park is great for exploring. Join the kids on a bike ride around the park and the BMX track or enjoy a coffee from the kiosk as they take on the playground, skate park and tennis court. After burning off all that steam, they’ll sleep well tonight!

Gunnedah and Tamworth are also an easy drive, so why not venture beyond the park and learn about the Aboriginal heritage of the lands and waterways from the Kamilaroi people, tee off at the Gunnedah Golf Club or explore equine and farming life. Find more things to do near Lake Keepit here.
