
Freshwater or saltwater — it’s the age-old fishing debate that sparks plenty of passion wherever anglers gather. Is it the serenity of casting across a glassy dam at dawn, chasing bass or Murray cod? Or the thrill of standing on a windswept beach, rod bent against the power of a surging snapper or tailor in the surf? Both offer their own kind of magic, and ask any keen fisho and you’ll likely get a very firm opinion.
It’s a surprisingly controversial topic. Many anglers grow up fishing one style and stick with it for life — freshwater fans swear by the calm, technique and connection to inland waterways, while saltwater devotees chase bigger species, bigger fights and that unmistakable ocean energy. Loyalty runs deep, and friendly arguments are part of the culture.
So, we decided to settle it (or at least stir the pot a little). After surveying thousands of fishers across NSW and beyond, the verdict came in loud and clear:
