Tuncurry is one of the NSW Mid North Coast’s best places to go for water sports, fresh seafood and outdoor adventures. So whether you have a long weekend or are planning to stay for weeks on end, there’s something for the whole family in this cherished coastal hamlet.
Take inspiration for your very own Tuncurry itinerary with our 3-day plan – there’s lots to discover and plenty of relaxation to be found.
Begin your first day in Tuncurry with a strong coffee and breakfast at one of the local spots, like House of Highness, Catch-22 Cafe, The Deck at Tuncurry, or Rockpool Beach Cafe. Once you’re full – or have takeaway secured – head to the Tuncurry Rock Pool for a morning dip. It’s right where the Coolonolook River meets the Pacific Ocean, and you’ll likely spot dolphins playing by the breakwall.
Spend the afternoon stretched out on Nine Mile Beach, or go for a relaxed walk along its roughly 12km of sandy shoreline. If you happen to have a 4WD, you can access the beach at its northern end, where it’s also a great spot for surfing. And as the sun sets on your first day, enjoy a seafood platter at the popular Thirty Three Degrees restaurant. The deck overlooks Wallis Lake, the perfect spot to unwind and get settled into your holiday.
One of the perks of staying in Tuncurry is its proximity to Forster. Considered twin towns by locals, there’s so much to discover when you cross the bridge over Wallis Lake. Which is why no Tuncurry itinerary is complete without a day spent in Forster.
Here’s what to do in Forster/Tuncurry on day two of your getaway:

The Barrington Coast is home to dozens of incredible day trips from your base in Tuncurry. Stretching from the rainforests in Barrington Tops all the way to the coastline, here are a few places to add to your Tuncurry itinerary if you’re up for exploring and enjoying a drive.
Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens: Much like Forster and Tuncurry, you get two towns for visiting one! Drive a bit over an hour south to find this gem right where the Myall River meets Port Stephens Bay. Don’t miss the singing bridge between the two towns!
Seal Rocks: Just over 45 minutes south by car from Tuncurry, Seal Rocks is a secluded escape for anyone wanting to disconnect and truly unwind. Bring a picnic, post up on the beach, and let your troubles drift away with the tide.
Pacific Palms: This beachside haven is on the border of Booti Booti National Park and less than a 30-minute drive from Tuncurry. With access to both Wallis Lake and the Pacific Ocean, it’s ideal for those craving the sand between their toes and purposeful downtime.

Your next holiday in Tuncurry can be as active or laid-back as you like because there are options for every pace. From strolling down pristine beaches to adventuring through national parks, plan to make sure you don’t miss out on what the stunning Barrington Coast has to offer.

A long weekend is the perfect introduction to Tuncurry and the NSW mid north coast. It gives you enough time to hit the beach, get out on a walk, visit Wallis Lake, throw back some fresh local oysters, and still have space to unwind. But if you want to tack on a day trip or two to your Tuncurry itinerary for neighbouring towns and national parks, budget for at least 4 to 5 nights.
If one day is all you have, here’s how you can spend it: start with a long black and smashed avo at Rock Pool Cafe, which is right by the rock pool for a morning dip. From there, you can wander over to Nine Mile Beach to stretch your legs (keep an eye out for whales off the coast from June to October). For lunch, enjoy freshly shucked oysters and seafood at Thirty Three Degrees, and then spend your afternoon at either the Great Lakes Museum or exploring the town of Forster across the bridge.
There are lots of family-and kid-friendly activities in Tuncurry and its neighbouring towns. Don’t skip the Tuncurry Rock Pool or the outdoor Tuncurry Water Playground, both safe for kids to splish and splash around. Across the bridge, you’ll find ten-pin bowling, laser tag and more at the Forster Entertainment Centre, which is great for a rainy day. Wallis Lake also makes for a fun day out, too – swimming, kayaking and boating are ideal for the whole family.
There’s a range of different towns to take a day trip to on the Barrington Coast. Check out the lighthouse at Seal Rocks, about 45 minutes south. Grab lunch in Pacific Palms, a short 20-minute drive and worth every minute. For a nature hit, Booti Booti National Park is virtually on your doorstep, ideal for rainforest walks and secluded beaches. Then, if you’re feeling like a longer drive, Port Macquarie is a little over an hour north, or Myall Lakes National Park is around an hour south.
For what to do in Tuncurry if rain has put a damper on your holiday, don’t panic – there’s plenty of options. If it’s a Tuesday, Wednesday or Sunday, plan your day around a visit to the Great Lakes Museum, then catch a movie at the Great Lakes Cinema afterwards. Or across the bridge there’s the Forster Entertainment Centre for tenpin bowling, laser tag and other games.
