Unwind in a riverside paradise and camp at Massy Greene

A Massy Greene camping getaway is one where relaxation, outdoor adventures on the water, and stunning vistas are all part and parcel of the rejuvenating experience.

It’s hard to believe that just a 20-minute drive out of Byron Bay can have you immersed in a Massy Greene camping experience next to the laid back seaside hamlet of Brunswick Heads.

Known as Bruns to the locals, this vibrant village of 1,700 residents is on the beautiful Brunswick River, and the area is blessed with more than its fair share of natural wonders.

Massy Greene Holiday and Caravan Park is only a 3-minute walk from the centre of Bruns and a stone’s throw from the ocean, making it the perfect place to set up camp.

A camping adventure between the sea and the river

A Massy Greene camping trip is the epitome of relaxation, and so it’s not surprising that picnicking is a favourite pastime of regular campers in these parts.

There are endless places to picnic around Brunswick Heads, but right on the doorstep of your Massy Greene camping spot is a picture-perfect picnic area on the Brunswick River, in the Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve

Pack morning a light lunch, and while away the day under the shade of native cottonwood hibiscus trees. The sound of wind blowing through the swamp oaks makes for a lovely soundtrack while you lie back on the sand or fish from the sandy banks.

Explore the beaches on a Massy Greene camping trip

Brunswick Heads Main Beach is the place to be to watch a sunrise or sunset, and it’s a hot spot for tourists and locals who enjoy a surf. During summer it’s patrolled, making it a great place for families to swim and body surf, and there’s a great children’s playground.

At the mouth of Brunswick River, Torakina Beach is calm, sheltered and a favored spot for families with young children. Get your snorkel gear on and cruise around in the shallow waters, watching the many small fish and crabs dart out of your way.

New Brighton Beach is where the locals head for surfing and fishing with their furry friends in tow, as it’s dog-friendly. When it’s a whale watching season, you’re likely to get great views of humpbacks cavorting during their annual migration north (June to August) or south (September to November).

Birdwatchers love Christmas Beach in the Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve, as it’s on the fork of Brunswick River and Marshalls Creek and attracts crested pigeons, pied stilts, cormorants and so many other species.

If you’re lucky you might see a bird of prey –brahminy kites and white-bellied sea eagles live in these parts – soaring or hovering high above waiting for a fish to dinner.

Speaking of fish, it’s also a popular place to throw in a line, with common catches being flathead, jewfish, luderick, mangrove jack, trevally, tailor and even delicious yabbies.

Sun and fun on a Massy Greene camping trip

For families looking for a unique outdoor experience that will delight the young ones and get them off their gadgets, take a wander along the Brunswick Heads Fairy Trail.

In 2015 a local woman called the ‘Fairy Grandmother’ started creating fairy houses in the bushland as a means of enticing children to get outside and enjoy the real world. Since then more and more fairy houses have been added, creating a whimsical wonder world sure to spark the imagination of the whole family.

For those after something more calorie-burning, hit the walking trail between Brunswick Heads and Byron Bay, and be blown away (metaphorically, but it does get windy out there) by ten kilometres of stunning beach views and awe-inspiring clifftop vistas.

For a fun night out with a choc top and popcorn fix, head to Brunswick Heads Picture House – a beautifully restored classic cinema with old-world charm for films, live performances. Enjoy a cocktail, cheese board or burger in the garden before or after the show.

Indulge in the village vibes of Brunswick Heads

Brunswick Heads is quite literally bursting at the seams with great places to dine, drink and sample the local produce and treats.

Bruns Bakery’s catch-cry not only sums up what they do, but also, the vibe of Brunswick Heads in general: Good Vibes, Baked Fresh Daily! This iconic bakery has been serving up bread, sweet treats and other baked foods since the 1950s, and you can watch all the baking action in the theatre-like kitchen.

If you fancy a European menu specialising in Italian dishes, paired with an exceptional wine list, look no further Lello's Pasta Bar and try the lasagna short ribs ragu. So good.

If you’re after a great Aussie pub with live music and all the classics such as chicken schnitty, fish and chips, burgers and steak and chips, then wander down to Hotel Brunswick, where you can indulge in a cold one in the beer garden overlooking Brunswick River.

Home sweet home – away from home

Whichever way you wander from Massy Greene Holiday and Caravan Park, you’ll find yourself next to the water, and yet everything you need is right there, including friendly, welcoming staff.

The camp kitchen has a fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster, kettle, electric stove and there are plenty of BBQs around the park so no one misses out.

There’s also a designated area for fish cleaning facilities so that you can impress your fellow campers by cooking up your fresh catch.

For families with kids, there’s a playground in the park, and organised school holiday activities. Conveniently, there’s also a laundry with plenty of washing machines and dryers so that after a big day of adventures, everyone heads to bed squeaky clean.

Reserve a piece of riverside paradise at Massy Greene

There are premium powered and premium unpowered campsites right on the water's edge - just perfect for up to 8 meter caravans. You can also choose from standard powered sites on grass or mat - great for all setups. Whether you have a camper trailer, caravan, motorhome, tent or swag, you can reserve yourself a patch of waterfront paradise complete with pine trees and grassy lawns.

All powered sites have access to water, and the ground is flat, so after your quick set-up, you can pull out the camping chairs and tables, dig out a book, picnic rug and fishing line, and decide what wonderful part of this water world you’ll explore first.
