Poets Precinct

Gunnedah's Poets Precinct is a tribute to famous poet Dorothea Mackellar, with a beautiful bronze statue of Dorothea on a horse. The Maas Walk, named after the late Mikie Maas, the founder of the Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society, is dotted with plaques featuring Dorothea's poems, leading the way to the statue. Across South Street, in ANZAC Park, the Mackellar Centre displays 32 stunning watercolour paintings forming the unique Jean Isherwood 'My Country' collection as well as memorabilia and photos of Dorothea and the Mackellar family and their main place of residence in Gunnedah, Kurrumbede Homestead. The Centre is open for group bookings only. The precinct is also home of numerous war memorials – Eighth Division Memorial Avenue, Remembrance Grove and the spectacular murals adorning the Water Tower Museum, as well as the Gunnedah War Memorial Pool Complex. Refurbished in 2018, the pool includes a 25 metre indoor heated pool, eight lane fully accessible Olympic pool, children’s water park , modern change rooms and kiosk. The spacious grounds of ANZAC Park , the pool and Lions Hospital Park are ideally suited for family gatherings or a morning tea break on your travels offering shaded spaces, toilets and picnic facilities.
