Poets Precinct

Explore the Poets Precinct – A Cultural Landmark in Gunnedah! Located in ANZAC Park, South Street, the Poets Precinct is a beautiful tribute to Australia's beloved poet Dorothea Mackellar. Stroll along the Maas Walk, a winding bushland path named after Mikie Maas, founder of the Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society. Along the way, discover plaques featuring Dorothea's iconic verses before reaching the striking life-size bronze statue of Dorothea on horseback. Across South Street, visit the Mackellar Centre, home to the unique Jean Isherwood "My Country" Watercolour Collection—32 stunning works inspired by Dorothea's famous poem. The centre also showcases memorabilia and photographs of the Mackellar family and their historic Gunnedah residence, Kurrumbede Homestead. The Centre is open for group bookings and Saturday mornings. The precinct also honours history with numerous war memorials, including Eighth Division Memorial Avenue, Remembrance Grove, and two spectacular Vietnam War murals by artist Jenny McCracken adorning the Water Tower Museum. Adjacent to the park is the Gunnedah War Memorial Pool Complex which offers a 25-metre heated indoor pool, an eight-lane Olympic pool, a children's water park, modern change rooms, and a kiosk—perfect for family fun. With spacious grounds, shaded areas, gas BBQs, picnic shelters, and playgrounds, ANZAC Park and Lions Hospital Park are ideal for gatherings or a relaxing break during your travels.
