The Hume & Hovell Walking Track is one of New South Wales’ most iconic long-distance hikes, stretching over 426km of rugged wilderness. But one of its most scenic and manageable sections runs between Reflections Burrinjuck Waters and Reflections Tumut River. Whether you're planning a weekend escape or a multi-day thru-hike, being properly prepared can make the difference between a joyful adventure and a challenging ordeal.

We Are Explorers’ Eva Davis-Boermans, content creator Paul Lojszczyk and photographer Daygin Prescott tackled this very section of the trail (In the Footsteps of the Hume and Hovell) and Eva shared her personal gear list—a minimalist but essential guide to what you’ll need on the track.

Hot tips for a smooth hike

Bookend your hike with a cosy stay

Start and finish in comfort. Bookend your trek with stays at Reflections Burrinjuck Waters and Reflections Tumut River. These parks not only offer convenient trail access but provide the perfect place to recharge in a cabin, enjoy hot showers, and reflect on your adventure.

Pick the right season

The best months to hike the Hume & Hovell are autumn (March–May) and spring (September–November). These seasons bring milder temperatures, blooming wildflowers, and fewer trail hazards.

Prepare for weather extremes

This trail sees summer temperatures up to 45ºC and winter lows down to -7ºC. Always check the forecast before setting off, and pack appropriate gear for unexpected weather changes. A solid rain jacket and layered clothing system are essential year-round.
