There are more than 100 ocean-fed rock pools along the NSW coast and the Blue Pool in Bermagui is regularly ranked among the prettiest. This gem along the Sapphire Coast is all opaline hues, think azure fading to turquoise to blush and then canary yellow.
Clamber down the cliff and you’re greeted by the 50 metre-long seawater swimming hole, expanded to its current size in 1937 by Bermagui resident and philanthropist Bill Dickinson. He’d be happy to hear that his efforts over the decades have kept the crowds coming, it’s an idyllic swimming and snorkelling spot for the whole family (there’s an adjacent wading pool for kids).
Dip your head under water and you’ll likely be greeted by a cornucopia of marine life, from anemones and sea stars to crabs, fish and marine snails. Handy facilities include a toilet, shower and change room.
If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge, head to the viewing platform for dazzling views over the pool and coast, with whale sightings possible over the winter and spring months.

Sapphire Coastal Adventures favourite time of the year is whale watching season. From August to November, thousands of humpback whales can be viewed off Bermagui, Eden & Merimbula. In these nutrient-rich waters they can often be seen feeding and playing. The impact of being out on the water and watching as a massive whale surfaces is one that will stay with you for life.
Bermagui serves up pleasant coastal weather for most of the year. Summers average 23–24°C, perfect for ocean swims and hours in the sunshine (just don't forget to slip, slop, slap!). Winters are short and cool, with highs around 16–17°C — ideal for crisp walks, cosy café feeds, and spotting whales from the headlands. Rain sprinkles throughout the year, keeping the bushland lush and the waterways sparkling. The most popular time to visit? December through April, when the days are long and the water’s at its warmest.

Not sure where to start? Bermagui makes planning easy. Spend a morning at Bermagui Blue Pool, an ocean pool that looks like it jumped straight out of your dreams, then wander through town for coffee or a snack by the marina. Embark on a whale spotting cruise, or head inland for a taste of local produce at a Growers and Makers Market if you're here on a Thursday. Come evening, there's no better way to end the day than with a BBQ at Reflections Bermagui.
