Day 1: Swim, stroll, picnic, repeat

Kick off your first morning in North Haven with breakfast at Beach Break Cafe before heading down to North Haven Beach for a swim or a barefoot wander along the shoreline. Mid-morning, cool off at the North Haven River Baths, a popular local spot that's safe and fun for the whole family, then stroll the Breakwall where fishing lines dangle and pelicans patrol.

Pack a picnic and spend the afternoon exploring Kattang Nature Reserve, a coastal heathland where banksia scrub and birdlife create a wonderfully peaceful backdrop. As the sun begins to dip, settle in for dinner at Moo & Bean Kitchen and Bar to cap off a perfect first day.

Day 2: From the clifftops to the chip shop

Climb to Camden Head Lookout first thing for sweeping views over the coastline and river mouth below. From June to November, this is one of the best spots on the mid north coast for whale watching, so keep your eyes on the horizon.

Suppose it's a Sunday, time your arrival in Laurieton around the Riverwalk Markets for local produce, handmade goods and a browse along the riverbank. Grab fish and chips from Laurieton Seafoods for lunch and find a spot by the water to eat like a local. End the evening back in town at Club North Haven for cold drinks, live entertainment, and that easy local hospitality the Camden Haven does so well.

Day 3: Rainforests, roos and a paddle to finish

Head into Dooragan National Park for a morning among the rainforest trails, keeping an eye out for koalas in the canopy and king parrots darting between the trees. Pack a picnic and push on to Diamond Head in Crowdy Bay National Park, around 45 minutes south, where kangaroos roam the coastal dunes and the scenery is hard to beat.

In the afternoon, tackle the Mermaid Lookout Track for secluded coves and sweeping coastal views before winding down at the Perch Hole picnic area for some kayaking, canoeing or a quiet afternoon by the water. It's the perfect send-off from one of the Mid North Coast's most beautiful corners.

If you fancy a short drive, there's plenty more to explore along the mid north coast. Head north to Port Macquarie for beaches and a buzzing town centre, or venture south to the relaxed atmosphere of Forster and Tuncurry, where you'll find fresh oysters, local seafood and beautiful lake and ocean views.
