Brunswick River picnic area is a great place to enjoy this peaceful coastal reserve, with views of the river and easy-to-access fishing spots. The access road to this picnic area is lined with many threatened rainforest trees, such as marblewood and stinking laurel (which doesn’t actually stink). In spring, the brilliant purple flowers of the hovea bush decorate the way as well.
This quiet spot is ideal for birdwatching. Pied oystercatchers feed on the rocks, while birds of prey - brahminy kites and white-bellied sea eagles – soar overhead. If you’re really lucky, you’ll see an osprey stealthily snatch a fish from the water.
Brunswick Heads is blessed with a warm, temperate climate, which makes it a joy to visit at any time of year. Summers, from late December to March, are sun-kissed and balmy, with January days averaging 23.8 °C — perfect for long beach swims and lazy river paddles. Even in winter, the air stays mild at around 15 °C, ideal for coastal walks and cosy pub lunches. Rain falls throughout the year, keeping the surrounding rainforest lush and green, with February bringing the heaviest downpours and September the driest skies. The sea is swimmable year-round, warming to a tropical 26.6 °C in February and a refreshing 20.8 °C in August.

Wondering what to do in Byron Bay? Start your day with the famous Cape Byron Walking Track, hit the surf at The Pass or simply laze on the beach and soak up the iconic Byron atmosphere.
