The full out-and-back is an easy 1.6 kilometres and suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Tucked into the Bellingen hinterland about 40 minutes from Urunga, the trails around the Promised Land and Never Never picnic area wind through stunning river gorge country with swimming holes, rocky outcrops, and dense bush. Some tracks here are unmarked, making navigation skills and solid footwear essential. You'll be rewarded with dramatic scenery and a sense of wilderness that feels remote, despite being so close to the coast.

The Bundagaree Rainforest Walk in Bongil Bongil National Park is an easy 6km loop, located just south of Coffs Harbour and a short drive from Urunga. The trail winds through a lush canopy of red olive berries, coastal banksias, and staghorns. Allow 90 minutes to three hours, and you could even add a bonus walk along scenic North Beach to Tucker's Rocks.

The small village of Mylestom sits just across the Bellinger River from Urunga, and the riverside and coastal tracks connecting the two make for a satisfying medium-length outing. The route takes in river scenery, bush birdlife, and some lovely, quiet beach stretches that feel a world away from the highway. Distance and route options vary, so check local trail maps before you go.
About 45 minutes inland from Urunga, Dorrigo National Park is part of the UNESCO-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia and home to some genuinely spectacular hiking. The Crystal Shower Falls Walk (6.2km return) offers more challenging terrain through ancient subtropical rainforest, with creek crossings, steep sections, and breathtaking canopy views.
