Urunga Itinerary Ideas

3 Days in Urunga NSW

Bellingen Shire is home to some of the Coffs Coast's most beautiful towns, like Mylestom, Dorrigo and Bellingen. Staying in Urunga puts you in a prime position to get out and explore the best of what the region has to offer. So here's a 3-day Urunga itinerary to inspire your planning and get you excited about your trip.

Day 1: Get out on the water

Start your stay with a morning stroll along the Urunga Boardwalk, that spans out over Urunga lagoon, and take in the views of the Belligen and Kalang rivers (with the sparkling Pacific Ocean in the background). If you like fishing, the end section of the boardwalk is the best place to try and hook mulloway or bream.

Speaking of which, estuary fishing is popular amongst locals, especially with two rivers to choose from. The rocks at Hungry Head Beach yield more bream and whiting, plus there's nearby picnic areas to cook up your catch! You might also spot a white-faced heron among the area's abundant wildlife.

For more wildlife, head over to Urunga Wetlands to explore its rehabilitated ecosystem, including a large melaleuca forest. And when it's the right season (May to November), Humpback whales can be seen breaching off the coast as they migrate.

Day 2: Soak up the local culture

The Coffs Coast is home to lots of incredible artists and craftspeople, all waiting to be discovered. Check out the Urunga Museum to learn about the areas maritime and aboriginal cultural history, or spend some time with local art at The Art Space Urunga (don't miss their unique outdoor gallery too).

But if your idea of culture is less about what looks good and more about what tastes good, you're in for a treat! Sip on a glass of wine accompanied by a charcuterie board amongst the vines of Raleigh Winery, or learn how honey is made at The Honey Place.

Day 3: Go day trippin'

Set out on a road trip to explore some of the surrounding towns: there's major hubs like Nambucca Heads to the south and Coffs Harbour to the north, or smaller villages like Bellingen, Mylestom and Scotts Head a short drive away. Each have their own charm with shops, cafes and restaurants to discover – a perfect way to while away an afternoon.

Or if waterfalls are your thing, you've come to the right place. Drive out to Dorrigo Mountain, home to the scenic Waterfall Way (a drive through Dorrigo National Park via steep and winding roads), and see some incredible sites, like Red Cedar Falls and Crystal Shower Falls. Or for a more committed drive, head inland for about 1hr 40m for Ebor Falls, or 2hrs for Wollomombi Falls, which has one of the most spectacular lookouts in the area.

How many days do you need in Urunga?

You can get a genuine taste of the area with one day in Urunga. The boardwalk, wetlands walk, beach, and a pit stop for coffee are all easily done in a few hours, but two to three nights is ideal for a proper, unhurried stay. That gives you time to explore Bongil Bongil National Park, take a day trip up to Dorrigo or into Bellingen, and still enjoy a lazy morning on the beach with nowhere to be.

How do I spend a weekend on the Coffs Coast?

Spending a weekend on the Coffs Coast is a great way to explore this compact region, especially by basing yourself in Urunga. Split your days between the coast and the hinterland to see a wide variety of scenery. Spend day one in the village: walk the boardwalk, wetlands and lounge about on Hungry Head Beach. Then, spend your second day inland via the Waterfall Way through Bellingen and up to Dorrigo National Park for rainforest walks.

Is Urunga a good base for exploring the Coffs Coast?

Urunga makes a brilliant base: it's centrally located just 25 minutes south of Coffs Harbour, with Bellingen a scenic 30-minute drive inland and Dorrigo National Park about 45 minutes up the Waterfall Way. You get all the peace and charm of a quiet coastal village without sacrificing easy access to the wider region's attractions. It's also a noticeably more relaxed and affordable base than staying in Coffs Harbour itself, which is a bonus many travellers quietly appreciate.

Is Urunga worth stopping at on a Sydney to Brisbane road trip?

Absolutely! Sitting roughly halfway and offering far more charm than a typical highway town, Urunga is one of the best value stopovers on the entire Sydney to Brisbane Pacific Highway run. Even a 90-minute stop gives you time to walk the iconic boardwalk over the estuary, grab fish and chips or a coffee, and stretch your legs on the beach before heading north. Many road trippers who plan a quick pit stop end up pulling out their phones to book a night's accommodation on the spot – consider yourself warned.

Is Urunga good for families with kids?

Urunga is one of the most family-friendly spots on the Coffs Coast in NSW. The combination of affordable accommodation, relaxed pace and fewer crowds – compared to other more popular coastal towns like Byron Bay – make it the kind of place that families return to year after year.
