Walks and Hikes in Evans Head

Natural beauty, with every step

Like other far north coast NSW destinations, Evans Head puts you in a prime position to put one foot in front of the other and explore on foot. With parts of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia and dozens of coastal walks as the main attractions, you’ll have access to some of the country’s most untouched landscapes.

So put your most comfortable walking shoes on and let's go on an adventure!

Travel down an endless coastline

For an easy, 2km gentle coastal loop through Dirawong Reserve, check out Joggly Point. Offering low coastal scrub, native birdlife and elevated headland views over the ocean, it might just be the short nature break you’ve been craving.

Or, if you fancy getting the blood pumping just a touch, Goanna Headland is a fantastic coastal track that winds over headlands and along the shoreline through Dirawong Reserve. With sweeping ocean views and a chance to spot dolphins or migrating whales in season, it's sure to impress!

Evans Head Breakwall Walk

This flat, kid-friendly waterside stroll along the river breakwall is perfect for wildlife spotting, picnics, and casual walks. There are scenic river views, and the trail starts right near Reflections Evans Head (very convenient!), plus it’s a good option for most ages and fitness levels.

Get amongst the ancient treetops

The far north coast of NSW has some of the most ancient and breathtaking rainforests in the world. From Border Ranges and Nightcap National Park, west of Byron Bay, to the protected heathlands and mangrove forests just south of Evans Head in Bundjalung National Park. Any of these parks is well worth a visit to get in touch with nature and local wildlife.

Iluka Rainforest Walking Track

When it comes to Evans Heads bush walks, take a short drive south to Iluka Nature Reserve and enjoy a lovely coastal rainforest stroll through one of the largest littoral rainforest remnants in NSW. Wind your way through lush canopy and giant strangler figs before emerging at Iluka Bluff Lookout with panoramic views and whale watching (when in season).

Birdwatching in Broadwater

Discover Broadwater National Park

While mainly known for dunes and swamps, Broadwater National Park also has short inland walks. They take you into open forest, bird-rich wetlands and up to an elevated lookout for panoramic hinterland views above Broadwater Beach. Ideal for a half-day walk (with all-important picnic stops!).

What Evans Head hikes are there?

For a moderate 10km hike, check out the Evans Head and Chinamans Beach Loop. A picturesque coastal loop that starts at Razorback Lookout and follows headlands, beaches and tracks through Bundjalung National Park. It passes New Zealand Beach, Red Hill Beach and Chinamans Beach too with great ocean views along the way.

Are there any good walks around Evans Head?

Yes, there's plenty! Try the Gummigurrah Walking Track in Bundjalung National Park. This moderate, 3.3km circuit is a lesser-known bushwalk near the Evans River that meanders through woodland, rainforest pockets and mangrove-lined creek sections. Great for birdwatching and enjoying diverse coastal hinterland vegetation, it’s less crowded than the main headland routes and is a peaceful nature experience.

How long is the Goanna Headlands walk?

The Goanna Headlands walk is a 3.5km return track, typically taking around 30 to 60 minutes to finish at a leisurely walking pace. It’s an out-and-back trail that winds across coastal heath and along the headland with panoramic ocean views before returning the same way.

What is the Bream Hole in Evans Head?

The Bream Hole is a calm, shallow river swimming and fishing spot on the Evans River, right near the mouth of the river. It’s protected from ocean swell, which makes it feel more like a natural tidal pool than a beach, especially at low to mid tide. Best at low to mid tide when the sandbanks are exposed, it's a local favourite for picnics, sunset hangs, fishing, and for kids to splash about in.
