Is Ballina the same as Byron Bay?

No, Ballina is a different town in the Northern Rivers, just a short 30-minute drive from Byron Bay. It’s considered a more affordable and relaxed alternative to the beachside paradise of Byron Bay.

When is the best time of year to go?

The best time to go depends on what you want to do. With a milder climate than other parts of Australia, you can visit Ballina year-round, but here’s a tip: for peak whale watching season, visit in spring (September to November), but if you’re looking to avoid the crowds, autumn (March to May) is your best bet.

Is Ballina family-friendly?

Absolutely! Ballina has an endless variety of family-friendly activities to keep kids (and adults) of all ages entertained. From wildlife parks and stunning beaches, to fishing spots and fine dining, Ballina has got your family covered for things to do and see on your next adventure.

Why does Ballina have a Big Prawn?

Ballina has been a huge part of Australia’s prawning industry. Which is why, in 1990, the Big Prawn was built, designed by South Australian sculptor James Martin. The attraction, measuring 9-meters high, weighing in at 35-tonnes, has an interesting backstory. It’s a must-see when you’re in town, located right off River street.

What’s to do when it’s raining?

If the wet weather has put a damper on your outdoor plans, don’t panic – Ballina has some fantastic indoor activities to explore.

Check out the volunteer-run Ballina Naval and Maritime Museum, open 7 days a week from 9am to 4pm. You’ll find it on the banks of the Richmond River, overflowing with exhibits and artefacts capturing naval history.

The Crawford House Museum in neighbouring Alstonville, open on Fridays (10am to 4pm) and Sundays (1pm to 4pm), is an old local farmhouse full of history. Exhibits rotate items from their collection and they often have book launches.

A much-loved local treasure, the Northern Rivers Community Gallery was established by Ballina Shire Council in 2007 as a regional cultural hub. It showcases exhibitions by local and touring artists, plus has a gallery shop for those all important souvenirs!
